Shortly after returning from Europe, we got a little furry surprise. Hiding in our shed was a 4.5 month old kitten, abandoned by her mother for some reason. The kitten was feral, hissing if we got within 10 feet of her. But she was dehydrated and hungry. After a few days, I decided we should at least get her fixed before re-releasing her.
First things first. I went to the San Jose SPCA and rented a humane trap. They have a feral program where they fix feral cats for $25. So, we caught her and took her in to get her fixed. After the surgery, we had to keep her in a room for 48 hours in order to heal properly.
Up until now, we couldn't get near her, let alone touch her. She was groggy from the anesthesia when I opened her cage to put water in but she crawled out, investigated the bathroom we set up for her, and to my surprise, climbed into my lap! I pet her and she actually purred.
For a second I was horrified to think the SPCA might have given me the wrong kitten. I had someone's house cat. But no, according to the vet, in some cases there are animals who come out of anesthesia and are completely different in personality. In this case, she became a complete lap cat with the occasional leftover skittish instinct. But, my husband is in love with her and now she's ours.
Meet Vixen.
